FIRST LOOK 2023: Robert Ruark FIRST EDITIONS, Ernest Hemingway FIRST EDITIONS, rare adventurer Henry Stanley

Tyrie W. Boyer of Outdoor and Adventure Firsts (booth 24) is retired, but still very active. He is the author of a fiction, RETRIBUTION, and when he is not writing or hiking, he is an avid hunter and fisherman. Over the years, Tyrie has collected hundreds of books related to his interest in the outdoors and old Florida. You will find most of his books are rare first editions.

Among Tyrie's offerings is a complete collection of Robert Ruark (14 books), including those published after his death. All of the books are first editions. The books are either fine or very good. With the exception of one, the dust jackets are either fine or very goood (with the one being good).

The collection will not be broken up and will only sell as one purchase. The books include:

GRENADINE ETCHING (1947); I DIDN’T KNOW IT WAS LOADED (1948); ONE FOR THE ROAD (1949); GRENADINE’S SPAWN (signed by the author), (1952); HORN OF THE HUNTER (1953); POOR NO MORE (1959); SOMETHING OF VALUE (1955); UHURU (1962); THE OLD MAN AND THE BOY (1953–1957); THE OLD MAN’S BOY GROWS OLDER (1957–1961); USE ENOUGH GUN (1966), THE HONEY BADGER (1965); WOMEN (1967); ROBERT RUARK’S AFRICA, (1991)

Price for the collection $2,500.

Also included in Tyrie's offerings is a collection of six books by Ernest Hemingway. The following are first editions:

FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS (1940) very good book and good dust jacket; ACROSS THE RIVER AND INTO THE TREES (1950) very good book and dust jacket; THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA (1952) very good book and just jacket; and as far as can tell TRUE AT FIRST LIGHT (1999) fine book and fine dust jacket.

Also, within the collection are early editions of ISLANDS IN THE STREAM (1970) near fine book and very good dust jacket; and A MOVABLE FEAST (1964) near fine book and dust jacket.

The entire collection can be purchased for $2,300. However, the seller is willing to negotiate on individual book pricing.

And finally in Tyrie's selections include two books by late 1800s adventurer Henry Stanley:

THE CONGO published in 1895; and IN DARKEST AFRICA, published in 1890.

Both works consist of two volumes, so the collection consists of four books. Also included are contemporaneous maps showing the travels of Stanley in Africa. Each volume has a map in the pouch for that purpose on the inside back hard cover for a total of four maps — plus other fold-out maps within the pages of the books.

These books are in very good condition after more than 130 years each. However, the inside hard covers have begun to crack.

This collection can be purchased for a total of $2,600 or, each work can be purchased separately for a negotiated price.

FIRST LOOK 2023: Two scarce Nazi-era Judaica books of film director Erwin Leiser

Two Scarce Nazi-Era Judaica Books from the Personal Library of Film Director Erwin Leiser

Philo-Atlas: Handbuch für die Jüdische Auswanderung and Philo-Lexikon: Handbuch des Jüdische Wissens

Both books were published in Berlin by Philo Verlag and are bound in the original printed publisher’s linen.

The Philo-Atlas (1938) is much more than a book of maps. It is a guide for Jewish emigration, spelling out which countries still accept migrants, how much money do they demand from those who wish to enter, and which occupations are needed in the prospective host country.

The Philo-Lexikon (1936) is a handbook of Jewish knowledge, intended to deepen consciousness and give both intellectual and practical orientation.

Both books are from the library of Erwin Leiser (1923-1996), a German-born Jew and director, writer, and actor, best known for his 1960 documentary Mein Kampf, composed of clips from old newsreels and film obtained from Allied and German sources. Leiser has hand-signed each of the books. His bookplate appears on the front flyleaf of the Philo-Atlas.

 Price (for the set) $1800.
